DSNY (The Manhattan District’s 1/2/5 Garage)
The Manhattan Districts 1/2/5 Garage, know to us as DSNY, houses the three district garages for the NYC Department of Sanitation. The facility facade incorporates over 2750 perforated metal fins that are over 1 meter wide and almost 460mm high. All the blades are operable, and in the office areas of the garage, the fins are computer controlled for accurate tracking of the sun. This design feature reduces the solar heat gain of the facility and greatly enhances the nature daylight conditions for the comfort of the occupants working inside.
The perforation size and pattern of the Solarmotion blades was critical to lighten and reduce the overall apparent bulk of the building. This was critical in the design of the facade to provide a sense of openness and scale that visually integrates the building with the neighborhood. The Solarmotion product is the most visible CS product, but there is also a substantial amount of CS louvers installed on the facility.
